Overview

A New Comedy from Houston's Own Bernardo Cubría

University professor Paola Aguilar desperately needs money for—well, we’ll let her tell you. So when the political party offers her a substantial paycheck to help them understand the Hispanic / Latino / Latina / Latinx / Latine vote, she begrudgingly takes the job. Can Paola navigate a room full of clueless strategists and save the election? Or will her journey lead to a bigger victory altogether?

This laugh-out-loud satire from award-winning, Houston-raised playwright Bernardo Cubría explores identity, community, and the hilarious absurdity of the political machine. Don’t miss the world premiere of this thought-provoking, sidesplitting comedy.

A Note from Playwright Bernardo Cubría:

Four years ago I dealt with my election anxiety by arguing with strangers on Twitter, and frankly, it was a massive waste of my time. So this year I decided that rather than screaming into the internet void, I wanted to do something more positive. I took the advice of one of my heroes, Garry Shandling, who used to say, “Don’t get mad, get funny,” and I wrote a comedic play instead.

This play is about dispelling the ridiculous notion of the Latino monolith, and is also about a woman’s deeply personal journey with IVF. I hope that by juxtaposing something so nuanced with something so two-dimensional, that we are challenging the audience to search for the humanity in all people, especially those they disagree with. My hope is that this play will ask us all to listen more than we lecture, and hopefully make us laugh along the way.

Cubría spoke with ABC 13 about the humor behind The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote. Watch the clip below.
